During a birding trip to the Snyder Canal, hosted by Tranquilo Bay eco adventure Lodge on January 1st, we observed 2 American White Pelicans resting at the mouth of the Changuinola river. The day before we had strong winds and constant rain for over 24 hours. Pictures credits Ann Fleck.

Margaret Thompson reports  a juvenile Nazca Booby  seen flying right by her boat in Golfo de Chiriquí, near Isla Bolaños and bocas pajaros, today. She also reports the continuing presence of the American White Pelican at Panamá Viejo, seen yesterday morning with two Wood Storks.

Sunday, December 28. American White Pelican ( Pelecanus erythrorhynchos ), still in the same place for over 3 days straight in the visitors center parking lot in Panamá Viejo, at the left side of the little island! Thanks to José Tejada for helping to get this wonderful shot! [Note: This looks like a full, handsome adult bird, unlike the scruffy juvenile-looking bird photographed last week , so unless pelicans achieve a full moult in eight days we may have a two-pelican situation here.]

Venicio Wilson: Mikko Oivukka sent me a picture of what thougth to be a Kelp Gull. On Tuesday, December 15 we both went to visit Panama La Vieja, where he saw it the day before, and did not saw the gull but saw an American White Pelican ! Also there was still the Lesser Black-backed Gull . Christian Gernez and I went later to check Costa del Este were we found a first winter Herring Gull . Here's a video shot by Leslie Lieurance also on Tuesday. The bird was then photographed on Wednesday by Orlando Jordán, and seen on Thursday by Camilo Montañez while driving the Corredor Sur.

The Audubon Panama fieldtrip to Punta Chame of last Sunday, March 20, succeeded in finding the two American White Pelicans that have taken residence in the area. This photo, digiscoped through Venicio Wilson's scope, was sent in by Linda and Tony Ward.

I'm currently on a birding trip (well, almost - we brought our wives) in Panama, and today we found two American White Pelicans in one of the ponds on Punta Chame.  We forgot to get waypoints, but it should be pretty obvious where it is. The ponds were the big ones (with white sand around, and a drivable dyke up the middle) on the south side, about halfway down the point.  There were two, and they were not associating with the Brown Pelicans.

Delicia, Pedro and Darién Montañez visited Punta Chame at dusk to try for the American White Pelicans that have been there since last Wednesday. The birds were there, unmistakable and right next to the road—my kind of birding. The spot is a large pool between the beach and the road, on the right side 16.7 km from the turnoff at the Interamericana. The banks were full of sandpipers with a few oystercatchers thrown in for variety. Go get'em!

 El pasado sábado 28 de enero, Osvaldo Quintero, Euclides Campos y mi persona nos dirigimos hacia Las Macanas. Entre otras cosas, encontramos un Mangrove Cuckoo , al menos seis Killdeers , ocho Caspian Terns , cuatro American Coots , cuatro Fulvous Whistling-Ducks entre los cientos de Guíchichis y una pareja (macho y hembra) de American Wigeons . Sin embargo, más importante, observamos un grupo de al menos 10 Long-billed Dowitchers  identificadas por la llamada, un "kick" enfático, nada musical que fue emitido por las aves mientras descansaban (alarmadas?), y también cuando volaron (en serie). También notamos su pecho de un gris bastante sólido y oscuro y la cola principalmente oscura, muy evidente al volar.  El mismo día, alrededor del mediodía, observamos en las salinas de Aguadulce, una fase blanca de Reddish Egret ... un inmaduro a juzgar por su pico completamente negro. Se encontraba más o menos a mitad de la calle que atraviesa las salinas, cerca de la misma, ...

Euclides Campos and Laura Reyes went to Punta Chame today, and they found two American White Pelican and an American Wigeon. After you pass the town of Libano and the former shrimp farms (they have cleaned them out) you find the first guard rail to your right side and mangrove to your left. Further, there is an embankment and you can see it from the guard rail.
