Migratory Raptor Counts

The Panama Audubon Society is conducting its 4th annual migratory raptor count at Cerro Ancón. The cumulative number of hawks and vultures counted as of Thursday, October 25 are: 71109 Turkey Vulture 93243 Broad-winged Hawk 49706 Swainson's Hawk 403 Missisippi Kite 5 Swallow-tailed Kite 2 American Kestrel 1 Merlin 144 Peregrine Falcon 106 Osprey 61753 Unidentified Raptor 276472 Total

Snail Kite at Costa del Este

On October 18, Rosabel Miró went with a visiting Department of Defense Partners in Flight group to the mouth of the Matías Hernández River, where they spotted a female Snail Kite . This is the first report of the species from the area, that has been heavily birded since 1994. She also reports hearing from freelance bird guide Gustavo Zevallos about a Harpy Eagle seen on October 21 on the banks of the Chagres River, about 10 minutes from the town of Emberá Drúa.

Leaftosser at San Lorenzo

Ariel Aguirre spotted a a Tawny-throated Leaftosser while birding San Lorenzo National Park's Tortuguilla Trail. The bird was hoping next to trail's third creek and making its call, a loud sharp : "zick, zick"
