Birding Summit Ponds

The PAS fieldtrip to Summit Ponds had lots of interesting sightings. A large flock of migrating Swainson's Hawks included one dark-phase individual. A single Philadelphia Vireo was also seen feeding on an Indio Desnudo Tree. The highligt was the return of the Capped Herons: two were seen on the far shore of the pond on the right. The Boat-billed Herons were also there.

Birding Achiote

The Achiote birding course had large flocks of migrating Swainson's and Broad-winged Hawks and a male Streaked Antwren on the road to Providencia, just before the town of Achiote.

Early Swainson's Hawk at Balboa

A light phase adult Swainson's Hawk was seen soaring over the parking lot of the PCC training center at Balboa. September is way too early for this migrant to arrive to Panama, and this is the first sighting of any migratory raptor for this season that I'm aware of.

King Vulture in Radar Hill

Raúl Arias saw a King Vulture flying over Radar Hill at about 5 PM. He also saw "huge waves" of migrating Swainson's Hawks flying over the Canopy Tower on top of Radar Hill.
