Peg-billed Finch, etc. in PILA

Imagen
Euclides Campos spent a couple of days birding La Amistad International Park. The highlight for October 7 was a pair of Green-fronted Lancebills seen at El Retoño trail. Things turned for the best on October 8, with Ochraceous Pewee, a male Peg-billed Finch (feeding on the seeding bamboo two meters overhead), and a few Slaty Finches. Also recorded were Ornate Hawk-Eagle and a few Purple-throated Mountain-Gems and Barred Parakeets.

We spotted Spot-Crowned Antvireo (Male & female), Brownish Twistwing, Thrushlike Schiffornis and a Green-and-Rufous Kingfisher hidden in the foliage at a small pond. Ornate Hawk-Eagle at Old Gamboa Road

Imagen
Gonzalo Horna photographed this juvenile Ornate Hawk-Eagle at noon on November 22 about 300m from the southern entrance to Old Gamboa Road. The bird flew in and flushed a Collared Forest-Falcon that had flown in in response to tape playback. Ornate Hawk-Eagle is very rare in the Canal area, especially this close to the continental divide, with just a handful reports from Pipeline and Achiote Roads.

Ornate Hawk-Eagle, et cetera at Altos del María

Altos del María resident Alfred Raab photographed this Ornate Hawk Eagle this morning, at 1100 m elevation. Also seen in the same area were 2 or more Black Guans and a male Purple-throated Mountain-Gem, both at 1050 m elevation [both at the eastern limit of their ranges.] Earlier in the morning he had a Black-billed Cuckoo at elevation 700 m.

ABA International Conference Highlights

It's only natural for a couple of rarities to pop up after five days of 90+ birders combing central panama for all things avian. Highlights include Red-tailed Hawk and Black Swift at the Canopy Tower, Ornate Hawk-Eagle at Achiote Road, Yellow-green Tyrannulet both at the base of Semaphore Hill and at the Metropolitan Nature Park, Great Jacamar on Pipeline Road, and Tody Motmots at El Valle.

Ornate Hawk-Eagle at Santa Fe

Bill Porteous reports a pair of Ornate Hawk-Eagles at Santa Fe, seen on the road towards Rio Luis beyond Alto de Piedra. At around 8am on a warm sunny morning they rose from the forest, circled a few times, and disappeared over the next crest. The wings were broad and very rounded and the tail long with at least two bands, which were white on the undersurface. From below, the body was heavily barred and darker than the underwings, while the dorsal surface appeared all dark, apart from the nape and neck sides, which were bright orange-tawny.

Ornate Hawk-Eagle at Achiote Road

An adult Ornate Hawk-Eagle was seen on Achiote Road, Colon, between the first and second bridge. Also of note that day was a male American Kestrel on the fields past the Gatun Spillway. On sunday, october 24th, Rosabel and Karl Kaufmann and Darién Montañez went over to the Atlantic Side to add birds to our NTT world bird count list. The Snail Kites were at their usual haunt on the pond by the railroad crossing past the entrance to Ft. Davis, perched on the fenceposts next to the water. The grassy fields on the earth dam past the Gatun Spillway produced a male American Kestrel, also perched on a small post. But the bird of the day was, without a doubt, an adult Ornate Hawk-Eagle seen soaring over Achiote Road at noon. Our first guesses ranged from Gray Hawk to Hook-billed Kite (which we were desperately seeking for the count). Its broad, rounded wings and longish tail were barred black and white, and the white breast had bold black splotches. The throat was white and the sides of the ne...
