Umbrellabirds in El Copé, a report by Cedric Kinschots

Imagen
I decided to follow up on your Umbrellabird sighting and visited El Copé this morning. At the exact spot mentioned in your report (the intersections of the Cuerpo de Paz and Auxiliary Trails with the Las Ranas trail, I played the tape and immediately not one, not two but three Umbrellabirds flew in. Some pictures attached, they appear to be one adult and two younger males. Other good birds this morning were Crested Guan and Snowcap .  I also saw several Smoky-brown Woodpeckers . I have been seeing these woodpeckers in El Copé for 12 years, even though Coclé is not mentioned in the range description of that species in Angehr nor Ridgley I believe.

Quick Visit to Achiote & San Lorenzo, a report by Venicio Wilson

Michael and Christian Gernez from Sendero Panama and Venicio Wilson visited the Caribbean side of the Panama Canal to scout some birding spots. Here are the most remarkable sightings: a very tame Yellow-throated Vireo in the garden at the mechanic who fixed our flat tire in Escobal a very shy family of White-headed Wrens in El Trogon Trail, Achiote Road a Black Hawk-eagle at Gatun Dam spillway a Crested Guan in the road to Fort San Lorenzo Yellow-rumped Warbler female Ruby-throated Hummingbird feeding in the flowers at the fort a pair of Indigo Buntings The Gatun Dam spillway had 3 gates open and hundreds of gulls and terns at the spillway and at the river mouth. At both places we had a large, dark-mantled gull which I believe was a Lesser Black-backed Gull . From fort San Lorenzo we watched a tern that seemed to me like a Bridled Tern : dark gray mantle, whitish narrow collar around neck, dark crown, white forehead, black bill. Anyone going that way keep an eye in tha...

Birding the Damani-Guariviara Ramsar site, a report by Venicio Wilson

Botanist Alicia Ibañez invited George Angehr, William Adsett and Venicio Wilson to join her expedition to Damani-Guariviara Ramsar Site in the Ño Kribo Region, Kusapin District in the Ngabe-Bugle Reservation. Before departing to Rio Cañas, we visited the trail to La Estrella community, next to the Rio Guarumo River in Punta Peña-Almirante Road looking for Melodious Blackbirds. Instead, we found 2 Grayish Saltators . This sighting extends the range of this recently reported species a bit more into the east. During our visit to Rio Caña and the Damani-Guariviara Wetlands we had some interesting findings. White-crowned Pigeons were seen 3 days in a row in the town of Rio Cañas, a new locality for this species in Panama. Three Crested Guans were spotted while navigating the Tiger Head River (Tagajed in the maps). Green Ibis were common, as was Olive-backed Euphonia . The most remarkable findings were the dark form of the Green Heron (described by Ridgely in his book), Least Bittern ...

From November 6 to 10, Jacobo Ortega took a small group of Venezuela Auduboners to the Chiriquí Highlands. Highlight was a tree full of Resplendent Quetzals seen on the 8th at the entrance of Respingo trail above Cerro Punta, with three adult males and 16 females and immatures. Also at the same tree was a male Three-wattled Bellbird. On November 10 at Macho de Monte, Cuesta de Piedra they found two Crested Guans.
