El sábado 22 de agosto encontramos tres ejemplares de Bare-necked Umbrellabird  [incluyedo este macho adulto] mientras pajareábamos en El Copé. Los pájaros respondieron al play back en pocos minutos. Inicialmente los observamos a escasos metros del inicio del sendero de la Rana Dorada como a las 7:30am, un par de horas más tarde los vimos nuevamente en el mismo sendero y a las 3:00 pm los volvimos a encontrar en la salida. Además vimos Dull-mantled Antbird , Orange-bellied Trogon , Yellow-eared Toucanet , Russet Antshrike , Northern Schiffornis y 30 especies más. El guía fue Ariel Aguirre y nos acompañaron Glen y Janet Lee, y Craig Bennet.

I decided to follow up on your Umbrellabird sighting and visited El Copé this morning. At the exact spot mentioned in your report (the intersections of the Cuerpo de Paz and Auxiliary Trails with the Las Ranas trail, I played the tape and immediately not one, not two but three Umbrellabirds flew in. Some pictures attached, they appear to be one adult and two younger males. Other good birds this morning were Crested Guan and Snowcap .  I also saw several Smoky-brown Woodpeckers . I have been seeing these woodpeckers in El Copé for 12 years, even though Coclé is not mentioned in the range description of that species in Angehr nor Ridgley I believe.

Camilo and Darién Montañez and César Trejos found a female Bare-necked Umbrellabird at El Copé on the morning of Sunday, August 2. The bird perched quietly on a low branch near the intersection of Las Ranas Trail and the Sendero Auxiliar.

Durante el fin de semana del 9 y 10 de julio se realizó la gira anual de Santa Fe, Veraguas. El día sábado camino a Guabal pudimos observar un grupo de 8-10 Black-faced Grosbeaks alimentándose en un árbol frutal al pie de la carretera. Algunos juveniles eran alimentados por sus padres. Otras observaciones incluyeron la Crimson-collared Tanager , una pareja de Barred Hawks sobrevolándonos a la altura de la nueva sede de ANAM en el parque, una Sulphur-rumped Tanager , una Olive-backed Euphonia alimentando a una parejita de bebés en un nido de lo más discreto y un Northern Barred Woodcreeper, estas tres últimas especies por primera vez reportadas en el área en una gira de SAP. On the morning of Sunday, September 12, still high on the post-deep-water-pelagic endorphins, Björn Anderson, Ken Allaire, Gonzalo Horna and Darién Montañez headed for El Copé in search of umbrellabird. And find it we did. After walking Sendero Los Helechos Trail, where we got Black-crowned Antpitta and Stripe-breasted Wren, we did Sendero La Rana. While waiting for a mixed flock to approach, a Bare-necked Umbrellabird was spotted sitting quietly on a branch, terribly backlit but at pretty much eye level. This bird had a full hood and some bare skin around the neck. It was soon joined by a second bird, which looked scruffier all over and was probably a younger bird. The flock eventually approached and provided a first-year female Cerulean Warbler . Later on, when we were making our way back to the visitor center, we were trying to lure in a calling White-throated Shrike-Tanager when another pair of umbrellabird showed up, this time two adult-looking birds. El sabado 28 de agosto del 2010, cuatro miembros/colaboradores de Audubon (Kilo Campos, Jan Axel Cubilla, Gloriela Archbold y Rafael Luck) se dirigieron en la acostumbrada 4WD FJ Cruiser hacia El Copé en búsqueda del Umbrellabird y otras aves. Posteriormente visitamos las Salinas de Aguadulce y reportamos entre otros Reddish Egret , Stilt Sandpiper y una bandada de aprox. 150 Black Skimmers .

During my last trip to Cana that started from December 28th to January 4th with Andrew Valleley and Dale Dyer, we had an excellent adventure where most of the Cana specialties were seen. Frank Rheind saw a Striped Woodhaunter on January 2th, and we saw it the next day at El Paletón trail. Next day we got an Orange-crowned Oriole close to the lodge. According to the book Where to Find Birds in Panama , both birds have not been recorded for Cana. On January 4th we returned from Cana to do birding at the Metropolitan Nature Park to chase the Pheasant Cuckoo, Yellow-green Tyrannule t and Slate-colored Seedeater . All of them were seen. Next day we headed to the west doing some grassland birding around Herrera province where we found a Striped Owl at Las Macanas Marsh. The following day produced the Coiba Spinetail and Brown-backed Dove [at Coiba Island, of course]. Complementando el excelente reporte de Jan Axel Cubilla, enviamos pruebas fotográficas de nuestro viaje a Cobachón (Euclides Campos "Kilo" y Rafael Luck, en donde en 24 horas y saliendo desde ciudad de Panama, logramos ver y fotografiar al endemico Perico Pintado siguiendo las instrucciones de Jan Axel y los conocimientos del área de Kilo. También aprovechamos y enviamos fotos adicionales de la visita al Cope ( Ave Sombrilla y Trogones Colirrayado y Ventrinaranja ).

El pasado domingo 16 de agosto, Hildegar Mendoza, Osvaldo Quintero y mi persona nos encontramos con Rafael Luck y Euclides Campos (luego que observaran Azuero Parakeet y Great Green Macaw en una intrépida gira a Cobachón el día anterior) en el Centro de Visitantes de el Parque Nacional GDDOTH (El Copé). Ya Rafael y Euclides habían caminado el sendero de La Rica (Snowcap trail), encontrando varios individuos de Bare-necked Umbrellabirds y un Lattice-tailed Trogon. Siguiendo sus instrucciones logramos observar TRES Umbrellabirds con crestas pequeñas vocalizando... el más grande con piel desnuda roja en el cuello parcialmente oculta (como se aprecia en la foto por Quintero). Había otro individuo (más pequeño y curioso) con algunas plumas blancas en el pecho (probablemente un grupo familiar en su época post-reproductiva?). También logramos observar una bandada mixta compuesta por varias especies de tanagers (Tawny-capped, Speckled, Black-and-yellow), por lo menos tres Yellow-throated ...

During the first weeks of January, I spent a few days birding in the Chiriquí highlands and foothills of Bocas del Toro with some friends, looking for some of the Talamanca range endemics. On January 5th a male Masked Duck and a Masked Yellowthroat were seen at Volcán Lakes. The next day we had a White-fronted (Rough-legged) Tyrannulet on the way to the ANAM headquaters at Respingo, where we saw a Costa Rican Pygmy-Owl close to the main building. On January 7th a single White-throated Flycatcher (juvenile) and two Bran-colored Flycatchers at Volcán Lakes. The following day we moved to Rancho Ecológico Willy Mazu. The birding was superb around the area yielding White-crowned Manakin on 8th; Lanceolated Monklet, Ashy-throated Bush-Tanager, Dull-mantled Antbird, plenty of Yellow-throated Bush-Tanagers, a Black-headed Antthrush (heard only) and a good bonanza for the day: a male Bare-necked Umbrellabird on the 9th. José García and Mahelis Rodríguez spent August 26-27 birding La Rana and Los Helechos trails at El Copé. Highlight was this male Bare-necked Umbrellabird, but they also found Plumbeous Hawk, Black Guan, Stripe-breasted Wren and Lineated Foliage-Gleaner.

José Carlos García sent this report of the seldom-photographed Bare-necked Umbrellabird he and Mahelis Rodríguez saw on La Rica Trail, on General de División Omar Torrijos (née El Copé) National Park on October 15. The fully-feathered throat and upper chest show this bird to be a juvenile, if you believe Wetmore; if you believe Ridgeley, this bird could be either a juvenile or a female. This is the second record from the area, which is the eastern limit of its range. José Carlos mentioned that one of the park rangers had also seen a male the day before, right next to the visitor center.

José Tejada spent the weekend at Fortuna. The best place he visited was Cable Car Road, a short trail near the STRI cabin. He had a male Bare-necked Umbrellabird, as well as a few Three-wattled Bellbirds, Chiriquí Quail-Dove, White-bellied Mountain-Gem and White-crowned Manakin. He also saw a female Selasphorus hummingbird that might have been a Glow-throated, or maybe something else, around Finca La Suiza.

On the first official day of the PAS fieldtrip to Santa Fe, Satuday, July 15th, 2000, we were joined by the rest of the group: Amalia Herrera, Cora Herrera and José Tejada. Early in the morning we saw a female Bare-necked Umbrellabird on one of the small trails that enter the forest from the road to the left after the Alto de Piedra school. It perched on a stick right next to the trail allowing for close inspection by the group. It was black overall, with a short bushy crest that gave its head a flat-topped appearance. It did not utter a sound, or do much apart from changing perches twice before disappearing into the foliage. Following the same trail we had a mixed flock with both Three-striped and Golden-crowned Warblers, and further in Rosabel saw a female Black-and-white Becard on another flock. On Satuday, July 15th, 2000, the PAS group on Santa Fe walked down the main road towards the continental divide in search of a Harpy Eagle [sic] nest. Apparently the road was cut in the dry ...

Over the weekend, Bill Adsett, Rafael Cortez and Jan Cubilla visited Fortuna and nearby Chiriquí Grande. They had some very interesting sightings, such as Lattice-tailed Trogon , Strong-billed Woodcreeper , Rufous-rumped Antwren , at least 9 or 10 Rufous-breasted Antthrush on the Continental Divide Trail, of which 3 seen well; Black-and-white Becard , a female Bare-necked Umbrellabird observed for 15 minutes on the trail behind IRHE station; Black-thighed Grosbeak , and Sooty-faced Finch . They even saw a puma crossing the road at night about 100 yds from the vivero.
